I imagine
Myself on a ship
In the harbour
Of Alexandria
Catching the stars
With an astrolabe,
In the city of Hypatia,
Eratosthenes and Galen;
the_blue_surge_400Colonial Greeks
Burning bright
With knowledge,
And the agora
Filled with
The babble
Of thoughts
And ideas of
Philosophers,
Scientists,
Doctors,
And poets.

Enterprising
And outward
Looking,
A meeting
Point between
The east and west,
All the knowledge
Of the world
Mingling.

O how I miss
You Alexandria!
In our barren world
Today we need
You more than ever,
And your free
Inquiring
Hellenistic
Spirit.

A multi-faith
City which eventually
Ate itself with the
Hatred of religious
Zeal and dogma,
And that disappeared
Under concrete
And Bedouin dust.

Do we suffer
The same fate
As you I wonder?
I fall asleep
And I imagine
Myself back
On a ship
In the harbour
Of Alexandria,
In a golden Hellenistic
Age catching the stars
With an astrolabe.
