DEMISE of the SOCIAL CONTRACT

There is anxiety
there is anguish
there are shadows and fear

vision01_400_01But there should not be anxiety
there should not be anguish
there should not be shadows and fear
about the next meal
for a family to gether around

over a coat for a child
or a blanket
over a place to sleep
safe and warm

There is anxiety
there is anguish
there are shadows
there is fear

But there should not be anxiety
should not be anguish
should not be shadows
should not be fear
about the absence of water

the water of hygene
and the water of mercy
a sprinkling of water
for a seedling
a cup
for those who thirst

There is anxiety
there is anguish
(polluting the atmosphere
like an excess of raw sewage)
and there are shadows
there is fear

Ah--ah but
there should not be
anxiety
there should not be
anguish;
no more should there be
shadows (the ominous
shadows of malignant power)
no more should there be fear

the fear of violence
not as threat but
violence as a promise

violence that stalks
mothers and fathers
violence that stalks
grandmothers and grandfathers
violence that preys
on children at play

A common desire is
to lift the human face
out of shadow to
eloquently close the eyes and
smile in calm peace
in a warming glow
of the sun

to make love without
fearing a car bomb a
gunman the
midnight terror hammering at
the family door
calling the lovers out by name

The party of the left
keeps talking about the
loss of freedom

The party of the right
complains nonstop
about the decline of competition

Between these warring factions
people waver bewildered
They may be good
good in their hears and souls
but not quite good enough
In their souls
they do not know who they are
In their hearts
they do not know what to do

So there is hunger
(and it grows)
and there is thirst
(and it grows)
There is violence
and there is war

And war and violence grow.
